A man's sweater VI: sleeves
Sleeves
The two sleeves are worked identically. We begin by picking up and knitting stitches from the armholes and then joining them in the round with the live stitches from the saddles. This is by far the trickiest part of working this sweater. After that we shape the shoulder section using short rows. I prefer using German short rows and use the abbreviation "gsr" for the special German short row stitch treatment, which includes turning the work. If using the wrap-and-turn method replace "gsr" with "wrap and turn". Note that "knit/purl this stitch" should then be interpreted as lift and hide the wrap by knitting/purling it together with the stitch.
Once the shoulder is finished there is a long section where the sleeve is gradually tapered and then a short section of straight knitting that ends with a 1x1 rib for the cuff.
- Pick-up and knit 18 stitches from one of the sides. Pick up and knit 3 stitches from the underarm cast-on, place 1 marker, and then pick up and knit the other 3 stitches from the underarm cast-on and the 18 stitches from the other side. Then knit the 14 live stitches from the saddle and join in the round. You have 56 stitches total.
- Knit the 14 stitches from the saddle and gsr the next stitch.
- Purl the 14 stitches from the saddle and gsr the next stitch.
- Knit up to the gsr stitch, knit this stitch and gsr the next stitch.
- Purl up to the gsr stitch, purl this stitch and gsr the next stitch.
- Continue to work alternate knit and purl rows the way described in the last two lines until there are 5 stitches before the marker.
- Knit up to the gsr stitch, knit this stitch, knit the next stitch and gsr the second stitch.
- Purl up to the gsr stitch, purl this stitch, purl the next stitch and gsr the second stitch.
- Knit up to the gsr stitch, knit this stitch, knit the next 3 stitches, slip marker, continue to work in the round. You have finished working the shoulder section.
- Work 2 rounds straight.
- Work 1 decrease round: work to two stitches before marker, k2tog, slip marker, knit one, ssk, knit to the end of round. Work 4 straight rounds.
- Continue to work a decrease round every 5 rounds as described in the previous line until there are 32 stitches on the needles. Work 10 rounds straight.
- Work 12 rounds of 1x1 rib (k1 p1 repeat).
- Bind off using an elastic bind-off. I prefer the tubular bind-off which is the one I always recommend with a 1x1 rib.
- Weave in the ends. The sweater is almost finished, we only need to finish the collar.
