For April, I wanted a small project, that would let me keep focus on my March project: the beautiful Purpurea Sweater by Teti Lutsak and, after finishing the sweater, still leave me some time to continue my February project (a self-drafted blanket). I decided to do a mosaic dishcloth, fun and quick!, I thought. But, that felt extremely underwhelming when I finished it in less than one day; maybe too much fun, I really couldn't put it down, and too quick for sure. It felt good to go back to work on the sweater already on the 1st of April, but, let's say I was feeling like I had fallen for an April's fool prank.

To add insult to injury, I ran out of yarn for the sweater! So, that gorgeous sweater is currently in hibernation. Now, I was really thinking that April had taken away my mojo. I tried to look at the bright side: plenty of time to work on the blanket, maybe even enough to finish it, but... I couldn't keep my motivation. So, I decided on converting my April project from one to three dishcloths. The reason is simple, the pattern I followed includes four different dishcloths and I had already knitted one of them years ago. So, why not finish the four. Right? Great idea! This pattern is super fun to knit and the resulting dishcloths are quite pretty. I highly recommend it (it is also a free pattern!).

Once I finished the dishcloths, I was still not satisfied and ended up designing and knitting a beanie. And, as if that was not enough, I finished a shawl that had been on my needles since August last year and isn't it gorgeous! (I forgot to take a picture after blocking, so you're going to have to trust me it is). All this and I still had time to get a lot done on the blanket. In the end, April turned out to be a super fun month.

Addi vs. Knit Pro: a review

The short version of this post: The difference between Addi and KnitPro is relatively small, so you'll be happy with which ever you buy. I personally prefer Addi Lace. KnitPro Synfonie and Nova being second best, in my opinion. Do not buy KnitPro cubics. Basic Addi have rounded tips that make knitting (knit and purl) easier and faster, but knitting lace (making increases and decreases) a lot more difficult. So I do not recommend them (even though I use these needle the most often), because sharper tips are simply more versatile. Metal vs. wood or bamboo: metal has less friction, thus knitting with this is faster and more pleasant. But, for the same reason, stitches are more prone to drop off metal needles. I'd recommend wood for beginners, metal for more experienced knitters. Metal needles are less prone to breaking. Converting patterns for Portuguese-style knitting: a tutorial, part 1

A few years ago I wrote a post about converting increases and decreases from German or English-style knitting to Portuguese-style knitting. Do you need to do that? Not really, there is nothing to stop you from just going ahead and knit a pattern exactly as it's written. Then, why would you want to do that? Because most patterns written for German or English-style knitting include as much knit stitches and as little purl stitches as possible, since the former are much easier to work than the latter when you keep your yarn behind the needles. On the other hand, when working in Portuguese-style, you keep your yarn in front of the needles and thus you would like to purl as much as possible. The best example of this is, of course, garter stitch, as used in the microplastic ban pattern . Elizabeth Zimmermann and the Percentage System

Elizabeth Zimmermann is like a goddess in the knitting world. You should know that the main reason for this is that she appeared on American TV at a time when there were not many TV channels and everyone watched the same programs. So that pretty much means everyone who appeared on TV at the time has made history (you can say she is to knitting, what Julia Child is to cooking). Nowadays, if you show up on TV, you only get to be famous for 15 minutes, how unfair... That said, I don't want to minimize how brilliant and worthy of her reputation she is. Her philosophy was that knitting was simple enough ("Knitting without tears", the title of her most famous book, sums it up) and there are (almost) no set rules.
